It is getting warm out again and that means mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are the carriers for heartworms and they find their way into your home all the time! So how can they not find their way to biting your pet?
It’s always being preached that heartworm prevention is so easy, but do we ever really break down how easy it can to keep your pet safe?
Oral and topical preventions are given every 30 days. Most prevention companies offer an app on your phone, emails, text to your phone, or a reminder of some sort so you don’t forget to give it or get it. Some people choose to give their prevention on the day of a certain bill such as their rent or power bill. In the end these types of prevention are also great in combating intestinal parasites that your pet can pick up from being outside.
Our hospital offers free monthly shipments of heartworm prevention through our online pharmacy straight to your house. That’s a good reminder when it shows up in the mail.
If you have trouble giving your pet an oral medication we offer Proheart. Proheart is an injection given in the clinic every 6 months by your veterinarian to protect against heartworms.
When the next one becomes due, our hospital mails you a postcard, emails you, can text your phone, and even call you to let you know to get your pet in soon. There are lots of ways to prevent heartworms and lots of products on the market. If you have trouble trying to select one or if the product does not agree with your pet let your veterinary staff help you choose the best prevention for your pet.
It is always easier to prevent something than to treat it after the fact. Don’t let your pet be one of the cases we have to treat this year.
